Video Marketing Series – Video production. Homemade or specialist?

this shows a video being produced for video production services

When it comes to your intelligent video production do you make it inhouse or work with a specialist provider?

You know that video can make a valuable impact on your audience from video SEO to client engagement. SO… What do you have in mind? You know your business, your clients, their pain points and how you can help them. BUT… Isn’t it frustrating when you see it in your mind’s eye and you know what you should do, but when you come to do it, it doesn’t quite work as you had imagined?

Here is a short but poignant story

A friend told me this story years ago that stuck with me. When she was a child she really, really wanted a BMX bike. This would have been early eighties when BMX was all the rage and one of the coolest things us kids had seen on tv.

My friend’s dad was a strong and quiet man. Steady and thoughtful. Pragmatic and resourceful. He wanted to help but didn’t quite pick up on the feverish grip of the BMX craze that promised long summer evenings, amazing stunts and high fives, and his daughter being recognised as the bunny-hopping, “totally raddest” (*see below) kid on the block. But he knew what to do. If his daughter Julie wanted a BMX he would make her a BMX, and he would start today!

*rad (ræd IPA Pronunciation Guide ) [slang]
Word forms: comparative radder, superlative raddest
ADJECTIVE
Rad means very good, cool, or exciting.
Everyone walks around looking rad all day, drinking coffee and working on a script.
I’ll miss those guys. They were totally rad.
Their mission is to scour the Baltic states for as many rad places to skate as possible!

Don’t stop believing

Julie could have been considered naive and impressionable with her new American accent, hanging about, chewing gum as she waited for her BMX to be born in the garage, but she was never stupid. There was slight trepidation. A gnawing feeling that maybe Dad didn’t quite know what he was doing, even if he did just happen to have all the parts needed for a BMX right there in the garage waiting to be put together.

Why didn’t he just go to a bike shop and buy one?

Julie waited. She might even have ignored intuition and told one or two friends on the street that, yes, she was getting a BMX bike, her dad was in the garage right now making one for her as they spoke. The puzzled look on 10-year-old faces mirrored her own underlying and unspoken fears. “Why didn’t he just go to a bike shop and buy one?”

Launch day

The end of a long week came, and it was time for the big reveal. Julie covered her eyes and held her breath.

“Ta da!”.

Julie’s hands snapped back from her eyes, her dad stood there in blue overalls, a beaming smile and a gift for his beloved daughter, and behold there it was a Frankenstein bike with two different coloured wheels and part of a teapot soldered around the centre of the handle bars.

Dreams are often shattered

Do not let your vision for great video that will do your business proud and make an impact on your goals become a half-soldered teapot and a couple of squeaky wheels.
